The years from birth through age 5 are a critical time when children learn important skills that provide them with the foundation for the development of later academic skills. At Crème we provide children with the critical early learning skills for reading, which will lead to improving overall achievement. Our curriculum provides activities to help children become aware of systematic patterns of sounds in spoken language, to manipulate sounds in words, to recognize words and break them apart into smaller units, to learn the relationship between sounds and letters, and to build their oral language and vocabulary skills. These are the skills that the National Early Literacy Panel found to be precursors to children’s later growth in the ability to decode and comprehend text, write, and spell.
Some of the literacy activities your child will experience include:
- Playing games such as alphabet bingo or letter search that aid in alphabet knowledge and letter recognition
- Singing songs and reciting rhymes that are associated with letter sounds and repetitive sounds at the beginning and end of words
- Reading books that expose children to a varied and rich vocabulary
- Helping children understand how print works by showing print while reading and by tracking the print with his or her finger, explaining that print is read from left to right, top to bottom, and so forth
- Providing books for your child to “read” on his own or with friends, and a chance to practice tracing and writing letters of the alphabet
- Being able to decode or read common signs and logos; for example, being able to pick out a picture of a stop sign from other road signs
- Knowing that capital letters are different from lowercase letters.
So, as you can see, there are many foundational skills to teach in purposeful ways to provide that strong start for your child to read. When your child is ready, Crème will have a variety of reading material available.
